Yesterday was my first flex day at Cerro Coso. All of the faculty from the five sites attended. I knew a lot of people and met many for the first time. I didn’t feel out of place, I didn’t feel like the newbie there, I felt right at home. It was just amazing to be in the same room as Paul, and Jim, and Valerie, and Matt, and Suzie, and several others that I have worked with and admired over the years. At lunchtime, I had the opportunity to speak with Ian from the state academic senate about the statewide technology and distance ed committees. I talked with Gary and Chris from the English department about linguistics, language development, and how to use technology to create a community for college English instructors in our region. At our division meeting in the afternoon, I was able to craft a division mission statement after we brainstormed some ideas. Then, later that afternoon, Valerie, Karen, and I went to the faculty party at Paul’s house where I had the chance to meet more people. I had a long talk with the college president, Sharon. Everyone was open, accepting, easy to talk to. Several even offered to let me stay at their house when they found out I was communting.
This place feels right. I feel like I belong and can make a contribution. I feel like I am at home 🙂
