odd semester

This has been an odd semester. I’m not sure what to attribute it to. I’ve had students drop a class because they said they received a threatening phone call from another (suspected) student in the class. I’ve had students missing because of rehab. I’ve had a student who did a few weeks in jail, came back really wanting to do the class and change his direction, and then disappeared again. One single dad got custody of his kids from his drug addicted ex but keeps having to go back to court for various things. An online student is having her bipolar meds adjusted but she keeps trying hard and has been working with a tutor for a few weeks now. The robotics class, which usually has a really energizing group of students, instead is a mix of some really cool people but several who, to be honest, I have no idea why they are there, throwing off the usual dynamic. I could keep going on. There’s been a lot of behind the scenes chaos in a variety of ways with people. I’ve been dealing with some health issues, including pneumonia right now. But then I see students like G.G. who has raised 10 children and is back in college… and like S.G. who took my class because a divorce lawyer told her she had to and is after 4 years, on her last class… and like S.S. who came to my class clueless and is now tutoring other computer students… and I am really torn…

    Hi Debbie,
I truly enjoyed reading this! I had a lot of odd behavior and circumstances in my classes in November as well. Every day in every class is different and you just never know exactly what to expect. I’m happy to see that you get to know your students so well.
