Happy Birthday Twitter!

I joined Twitter on July 30, 2007. At the time, Twitter was a little over a year old and I thought it was really dumb. What did I care about what other people were doing? Who had time for that, anyhow? I did it because a friend told me to, but I didn’t see any immediate value. I think I posted one or two things and then put it away for several months.

The friend who originally got me hooked into it, bugged me again to give it another try. Actually, I think she posted something that I found very interesting. This time, I made an effort to follow some of the folks she followed, since we had a shared interest in education, and kept building up my network. Once I got connected, I was hooked. It’s been a way to:

I could give so many more examples… but you get the picture! It’s been an invaluable resource over the past 5 years!

One of my absolute favorite former student “tweeples” is a retired truck driver who is totally connected to the world around him through Twitter. He took my computer literacy class and set up a twitter account in January 2011. He’s coming up on 13k tweets a little over a year later (way more than me!) and has pretty impressive stats! I love seeing his updates! Even as I was writing this post, he was commenting on one of my recent blogs:

Today I followed a Facebook post about Twitter’s 6th birthday. Interesting stats from a number of different angles – as a start-up business model, as a communication mode, as a commentary on the nature of social media, as a means of altruism, and as a tool for citizen journalism. I use it for personal connections, professional development, community connectedness, and as primary news source. Nothing lasts forever, however… it will be interesting to watch as Twitter matures to see where it goes, and what comes around to challenge it. As with most things in life, Twitter is what you make of it, and you get out of it what you put into it.

What will you tweet about today?

Here are the stats, from: http://gadgets.ndtv.com/shownews.aspx?id=GADEN20120197354&Sec=&nid=188522
